Williamstown squares season ledger

Williamstown was back to its best in an 88-point win over Frankston in the Victorian Football League at the Williamstown Cricket Ground on Saturday.

The Seagulls were eager to atone for their loss to Werribee a week earlier and did so with a vengeance against another stand-alone side.

After a relatively tight opening to the match, the Seagulls led by 18 points at quarter-time. They put the foot down in the second quarter to kick 13 of the last 15 goals kicked for the game.

To underline their dominance, the Seagulls had a massive 126 more disposals and 23 more inside 50s.

The chief weapon in attack for Williamstown was Christian Buykx-Smith. The impressive young forward slotted four goals – the same number of majors kicked by the whole Frankston team.

Jack Dorgan capped a best-on-ground performance with a goal.

Dorgan finished with 22 disposals, six marks and six tackles in a well-rounded display.

The major ball winner for Williamstown was Michael Gibbons, who had 33 disposals, eight marks and five tackles. Gibbons looks to be on track for another super consistent season. He, too, topped off a quality game with a goal.

Other ball magnets were Brett Bewley, Adam Marcon, Willie Wheeler and Ben Jolley.

Marcon, Nick Rodda and Ben Cavarra booted two goals apiece.

Williamstown has squared its season ledger at 2-2 ahead of an away clash with Coburg Lions at Piranha Park on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Footscray will be refreshed for its clash with Richmond at VU Whitten Oval on Saturday night after having the bye in the last round.

Meanwhile, a new VFL Women’s season kicks off this weekend. Williamstown will play its first game on the road against Collingwood at Warrawee Park in Oakleigh on Saturday.

Footscray will face off with Richmond in a twilight clash at VU Whitten Oval on Saturday.
