Winning start for Altona

Altona started the Bowls Victoria weekend pennant premier division season with a close win, while Yarraville Footscray was on the wrong end of a thriller.

The season finally got underway on the weekend, with some really good matchups in the top division.

There was not much that separated Altona and Mentone, with the two teams winning two rinks each.

Altona snuck home, winning 70 (14)-66 (4). Nick Cahill’s rink was the big winner for Altona on the day, winning 22-12.

Nathan Wilson’s rink snuck home 22-19, while Dane McKinnon’s rink lost 14-12 and Reed Chanter’s rink lost 21-14.

Meanwhile, Yarraville Footscray fell just short against Clayton at home.

Clayton three of the four rinks on the way to a 79 (15)-76 (3).

Brett Mahoney was the winning skip for Yarraville Footscray with his rink winning 19-15. Brendan Umbers rink shared the points as they finished 19-apiece, while Nelson Ball’s rink lost by one shot.

In the other rink, Wayne Roberts lost 22–16.

Melbourne, Bundoora RSL and Fitzroy Victoria were the other winners in premier division.

In round two, Yarraville Footscray faces Deer Park, while Altona is home to Melbourne.

In division 1, section 1, Yarraville Footscray 2 claimed all 18 points against Burwood District.

Meanwhile in division 2, section 1, Altona Sports lost to Keilor, 76 (15)-62 (3), while Yarraville Footscray 3 defeated Hoppers and Altona 2 beat Melton 2.
