Wolves set the tone with consistency

Consistency has been the key for the Williamstown Wolves so far in the Baseball Victoria summer league division 2 season.

The Wolves sit on top of the table after 11 rounds, with eight wins and have shown some really good signs.

President Chris Jackson said the hard work was starting on the training track.

“We’re very happy,” he said. “We’ve been very consistent going into the pre-season and we’re starting to show that consistency through the start of the season.

“It’s a long season though, we have to continue that.”

Jackson said they had a lot more depth at the club this season which was also helping with the consistent results.

As well as the top team on top of the ladder, the second side is in the same position.

“We managed to get a few guys from Geelong and an import as well,” he said.

“We have a pretty good group and we’ve shown a lot more depth across the first and seconds. We have a lot more pitching depth which is something we’ve been lacking for the last few years.

“We’ve got guys who have been really strong in the seconds and putting pressure on for spots.”

The Wolves depth means they still have a couple of aces up their sleeves for the season part of the season.

Import Yo Takehara is yet to pitch, with Jackson saying they would look to get some work into him in the coming weeks.

The Wolves had one of their more disappointing results of the season, losing to Ormond Glenhuntly losing 8-3.

Jackson said they were their own worst enemy.

“Saturday’s game was disappointing,” he said. “Ormond’s pitcher was really sharp and we made a lot of errors.

“There was a bit of player movement with some injured players and unavailability.

“We still fielded what we thought was a strong team. We made too many errors and didn’t help our pitchers.”

Jackson said as it had been all season, training and the non-game day stuff would continue to be the keys this season.

“We need to get to training and do the work outside games,” he said.

“If we’re doing everything and everyone is coming to training and keeping up focus on the second half of the year, hopefully it can continue.”

The Wolves this week face local rival the Newport Rams. Jackson said it’s a match they look forward to each season.

The Rams come into the match on the back of a disappointing 14-6 loss to the Werribee Giants.
