Spotswood’s hold on second spot in the Western Region Football League division 1 is starting to appear shaky.
Chinks in the Woodsmen’s armour were exposed by Werribee Districts in a 21-point loss at McLean Reserve on Saturday.
The travelling Tigers did as they pleased in the second half to finish with 11 more scoring shots.
Only their inaccuracy in front of goal – a woeful 12.20 on a fine day – prevented the margin from blowing out further.
The Woodsmen are a game clear in second, but have the worst percentage (99.42) of any side in the top five, so they cannot afford any more slip-ups.
They will need to re-group in quick time for a grand final re-match with two-time defending champions Deer Park at McLean Reserve on Saturday.
Altona produced one of its most complete performances of the season to dismantle Sunshine Kangaroos by 61 points at JK Grant Reserve.
The Vikings kick-started the rout with four goals to one in the opening term and never looked back, peaking in a breathtaking eight-goal third term.
Shaun Collis had the Midas touch in front of goal with five majors, while Cameron D’Altera added three and there were two each to Brett Shiels, Mitch Turnbull and Jayden Post.
Jack Marlais was named the Vikings best for the third week in succession.
The Vikings are a game and percentage outside the top five but at 4-4 at least have a fighting chance of reaching the finals.
But the Kangaroos, a game and a half further back, will need a miracle to make it from there.
Division 2
West Footscray showed no mercy on cellar-dweller Sunshine Heights, racking up a cricket score win.
The Roosters, a game clear in second, booted 20 goals in each half to run out 233-point winners, 40.21 (261) – 3.10 (28).
Munir El Houli was unstoppable with 10 goals in a best-on-ground display, while Corey Thomas (seven), Jamie Zerafa (five) and Damien Yze (five) also had the kicking boots on.
Yarraville-Seddon’s guns fired to record a 108-point win over Manor Lakes at the Yarraville Oval.
It was a raffle for the goals between Eagles stars Gordon Hillsdon (seven), Jason Harmes (six) and Sam Boyce (five).
The Eagles needed the win to stay in third after fourth-placed North Footscray thrashed Glenorden by 66 points at Heathdale Oval.
Division 3
Parkside prevailed by 12 points over Laverton, while Braybrook was out-classed by 62 points by Wyndham Suns.
