Yarraville-Seddon is the most unpredictable side in the Western Region Football League division 2.
You never know what you’re going to get from the Eagles as they strive for consistency.
The Eagles followed up their shock loss to lowly Glenorden with an all-the-way 37-point win over West Footscray on the league’s return to Whitten Oval on Saturday.
Coach Dean Callaway was not surprised to see his side bounce back after a week of soul-searching.
“We had a good week on the track after our bad loss to Glenorden the week before,” he told Star Weekly.
“We said a few home truths, went back to basics and just needed to fix a few things up. We went in confident we could beat them again.”
The Eagles have lost four times this season – three of those to teams below them on the ladder.
They have now beaten West Footscray, second favourite for the flag, twice this campaign.
The Eagles relished the chance to run the Roosters off their legs on the wide expanses of the Whitten Oval and they did so relentlessly.
“It was going to take a team of 22 to play four quarters and the result showed we did that,” Callaway said.
“We rewarded runners going past and we really cut them open with our hands and our spread. The week before we didn’t do that and we weren’t prepared to push hard and run into space and be useful as an option.”
Lachie Knight has risen to prominence with the Western Jets in the TAC Cup this season.
This time, he was doing some damage for his local club, with the Jets releasing him to the Eagles during the bye round of the elite under-18 competition.
Knight did not disappoint, taking out the best-on-ground medal after a scintillating display.
“He’s just a workhorse,” Callaway said. “He runs hard, he’s got a strong body and can take a nice overhead mark.
“He has everything. He’s the elite footballer who you like to have in your side. Hopefully, come finals time, we’ll have him again.”
Gareth Newton was stiff not to take out the medal, but the captain wasn’t overly fussed after his side got back on track with a win.
“It was his physical presence on the ground, he’s so hard at it,” Callaway said.
“He’s a bit like Lachie, but an older version. He has good height, he can kick the footy long and he can run.”
Stephen D’Orazio and Sam Boyce booted three goals each for the Eagles.
Jadyn Trowsdale was best for the Roosters, while Damien Yze slotted four majors.
Meanwhile, North Footscray took the challenge right up to ladder-leader Wyndhamvale, but went down by seven points.
In division 1, Spotswood won by 11 points in a hard-fought match against St Albans and Altona lost by 47 against Deer Park.
In division 3, Braybrook stunned Laverton Magpies by 22 points, while Parkside pipped Sanctuary Lakes by two points.
