All-female leadership team tipped for Hobsons Bay Council

BARRING upsets, Angela Altair is tonight expected to be elected mayor of Hobsons Bay, with Luba Grigorovitch as deputy.

It would be the first all-female leadership team in Hobsons Bay Council’s history.

Cr Altair, who represents Strand ward as an independent, is serving her fifth term in office after being elected to the council  in 1999.

She made history as Australia’s first Maltese-born female mayor in 2002 and was deputy mayor in 2003, ’07 and ’08.

At last year’s Think Women For Local Government forum in Altona, Cr Altair revealed that in 2008 she had sacrificed a second shot at the mayoralty because of her friendship and a deal made with fellow Strand ward councillor Peter Hemphill.

Cr Grigorovitch, who was Labor’s shining star when at 23 she became the youngest person elected to the council in 2008, is tipped to become a mayor some time during her second term in office.

The mayor and deputy mayor will be elected at a meeting starting 7pm at the Hobsons Bay Civic Centre in Altona.
