A Facebook campaign to find a Siberian husky (pictured) lost or stolen from Newport has snowballed, with the Help Find Rusty page receiving 1896 ‘likes’ and 1159 people ‘talking about this’.
Hundreds also changed their profile picture to Rusty’s missing dog flyer for 24 hours in a bid to bring him home. The red and white dog went missing on September 8.
Owner Marina Eknonomou said the exposure had its drawbacks, with a hoax call and ransom attempt. “I recently received a phone call from a man telling me that if I don’t take a brief case with $600 to a park of his choice, he will mutilate my dog and send me pictures of him.
” I have received threatening phone calls telling me to stop searching for Rusty also. Rusty was actually bought to fulfil a dream of my father’s who passed away from cancer 12 years ago. I recently did the Ride to Conquer Cancer for my father and raised over $10,000 in his memory. I just want Rusty home so I can keep living his dream for him.”
