WILLIAMSTOWN Wolves produced a Houdini act to overcome Chelsea Dolphins 14-9 in a Baseball Victoria summer league division 2 nailbiter at Edithvale Road Reserve on Sunday.
The Wolves were staring into the abyss with two outs, two strikes and one-run deficit in the ninth, but somehow they escaped.
Not only did the Wolves find an equaliser run, they got the go-ahead and proceeded to pile on further misery to open up a five-run lead and snuff out whatever chance the Dolphins had.
“We just got out of jail,” Wolves playing president Ryan Camov said. “We scraped home after being behind from pretty much the second inning.
“It’s easy to play when you’re frontrunners, but it’s always a challenge to come back when you’ve got to work hard from behind, so it was a great test of character for us today.”
It was a cliffhanger finish with an extraordinary sequence of events taking place for the Wolves to get up.
Twice the Wolves were one pitch away from losing. That’s when the never-say-die approach kicked in.
“We continued to push and push,” Camov said. “Some of our guys had good, long at-bats and drew walks to load the bases.”
The Wolves moved into equal first with the win, joining local rivals Newport Rams on six wins after the Rams lost for the first time.
