Premier Cricket: High-flying Kight rescues Dogs

FOOTSCRAY Edgewater has staged a remarkable recovery to post a competitive 242 on day one against Melbourne in the Victorian Premier Cricket at Merv Hughes Oval on Saturday.

The Bulldogs were looking at a disastrous total as they limped to 8-71, but the home side’s chances received a massive boost with a stunning middle to lower-order revival.

Dylan Kight, a star of last summer, had been quiet with the bat heading into the game for a variety of reasons.

For starters, the productivity of the batsmen above him limited him to just two knocks in the opening four games.

Then on the rare occasions when Kight found himself in the middle, he failed with scores of five and 10.

But Kight, a bona fide star of this competition, was never going to be down for long.

The rising star played one of his most patient innings to resuscitate the Bulldogs.

Kight made 81 off 224 balls and spent nearly five-and-a-half hours in the middle. It wasn’t a lone hand — it couldn’t be with the pickle his top order had left him in.

Michael Kelliher, who came in at No.10, produced a great tail-ender’s performance with 78 off 178 balls.

Kight and Kelliher figured in a superb 110-run ninth wicket partnership.

Kight was not finished, powering on with the assistance of Brad Robertson, who made 22 not out as the score passed 200.

To the relief of the Demons, Kight’s downfall would be of his own doing with a run out, but not before dragging his side back into the contest and setting up what should be a thrilling finish on Saturday.

Meanwhile, young pup Guy Walker posted his maiden Premier Cricket century in the seconds.

Walker was the cornerstone of the Bulldogs’ massive 328 against the Demons at the Albert Ground.
