A WOMAN has been shot in the head and killed in broad daylight in a residential West Footscray street.
The woman, aged in her 40s, was shot dead Monday on afternoon by a man known to her, police believe.
Witnesses report a man in his 50s and the woman arrived in separate cars and that an argument in the street before the shooting.
Senior Sergeant Stephen McIntyre said police were called to the dispute about 2.30pm.
“At some stage a firearm has been produced and a female we believe in her 40s has received a number of fatal gunshots,” he said.
“A male, believed to be in his 50s, is currently in custody and is being spoken to in regards to this. We believe the parties were known to one another and it doesn’t appear to be related to any other form of crime.”
Police believe the woman was shot a number of times with a rifle which was then left on her body.
The man was taken into custody at the scene.
Police are also taking a witness statement from a man who lived in the street who may have been involved in the altercation.
