A RED-hot Altona has moved into the Bowls Victoria premier division top two. The A’s produced their most telling win of the year to date when they hammered finals contender Clayton at Civic Parade on Saturday.
The 23-shot win has seen the A’s leapfrog both the Clays and Moonee Ponds and they could soon be snapping at the heels of ladder-leader Brighton if their form holds.
A’s skip Brett Dodd said it was satisfying to get one back on the Clays after losing to that side in the first round of matches.
“We said before the game that we owed them one and we got them back,” he said. “You have to win these games against teams at the top.”
The A’s claimed three of the four rinks in the big clash. These days they can virtually bank a victory for the Brenton Coad rink.
Coad and his crew had the most significant win of the day, 26-13.
Farris Derrij continues to perform at a high level within that rink though it was touch and go whether he had a place in the A’s top 16 before the season.
The other winning rinks were David Zitter (22-17) and Brad Peck (24-16).
Dodd was downed 20-17.
The A’s will visit the talent-laden Melbourne on Saturday and Dodd is wary of the threat the Demons will pose.
“It’s another big test for us.”
