Rider clocked at 168km/h in Yarraville as traffic offences mount

POLICE have caught a man riding an unregistered motorcycle at more than double the speed limit on the West Gate Freeway.

The 40-year-old Port Melbourne man was allegedly travelling at 168km/h in an 80km/h zone near Williamstown Road in Yarraville about 6.30am on Tuesday.

His bike was impounded for 30 days. Police said he was expected to be charged on summons with speeding and riding an unregistered motorcycle.

It comes a day after police ended its summer road blitz, which caught tens of thousands of motorists over the Christmas/New Year period.

Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill said the results of the Summer Stay campaign were disappointing.

He said police detected 75,985 traffic offences, which included:

• 5045 disqualified and unlicensed drivers

• 6559 unregistered vehicles

• 2863 drink drivers

• 396 drug drivers

• 24,709 speeding offences

• 3299 seatbelt offences

• 6077 mobile phone offences

Police also impounded 472 vehicles.

“While it’s an improvement on last year, the results show that one in 450 drivers breath-tested returned a positive reading – that is still far too many,” Mr Hill said.

“More than 1700 drink and drug drivers were taken off the road during Operation RAID alone, which ran for three weeks at the beginning of the campaign.

“We need to see more responsibility, not only from the drivers themselves but from their passengers, their friends, their colleagues – if you know someone’s had too much to drink, don’t let them drive home.”
