Truck crashes through busy Spotswood boom gate

A TRUCK smashed through a boom gate in the Hudsons Road shopping strip in Spotswood yesterday before taking off in the direction of Melbourne Road.

It’s believed that, about 10.15am, the truck travelling north in Hall Street turned left into Hudsons Road before crashing through a boom gate and flattening a fence, which guarded a pedestrian crossing.

Dani Cillessen, of the Spottiswoode Hotel, said: “Basically, a truck’s come through and just driven off. It happened so quickly,” she said. “It’s just literally come through and done a runner on it. It’s a tight corner because you’ve got sort of a three-way street here where the railway is.”

Sergeant Bob Stanwick, of Altona North police, said the driver may not have realised he had struck the gates. Police are asking the driver to come forward. Passersby have provided a partial registration number to police.

Metro spokeswoman Larisa Tait said the crash caused minimal delays. V/Line spokesman James Kelly said regional trains were not impacted.
