More students set to study at VU

Victoria University has offered 4445 study places this year, compared with 3167 first-round offers in 2012. Deputy vice-chancellor Professor Anne Jones said ATAR entrance scores for many courses were dropping. “The upside is that students who may previously not have had the opportunity to study subjects such as law may now have that opportunity.”

Council meeting venue changes

Hobsons Bay Council meetings will be at different locations this year under a new mayoral program. The first meeting, at 7pm on February 12, is at Williamstown Town Hall in Ferguson Street. Opera singer Hayley Edwards, and Jennifer Lund, will perform before the meeting. The public should be seated by 6.30pm.

Charges laid over two stabbings

Police have charged a Richmond teenager over two stabbings in Footscray last month. One stabbing was in Gordon Street, Footscray, about 10.30pm on December 29 —the other in a McDonald’s car park in Ballarat Road. The boy, 16, was charged with intentionally causing serious injury and affray. He was bailed to appear in a children’s court in April.

Roads, roundabouts improved

Maribyrnong Council has upgraded roads in Seddon and Footscray, including a new roundabout on the corner of Charles and Albert streets. Workmen also installed speed humps, resurfaced and widened a bike lane along Pilgrim Street in Seddon, and painted bike lane markings at Footscray’s Buckingham and Victoria streets intersection.
