Newport Substation soft-shoe shuffles back to Shanghai’s golden jazz age

Dumplings will be served from a yum-cha truck outside Newport’s Substation when the venue hosts an event celebrating Shanghai’s golden jazz age.

Organiser Barbara Heggen, pictured with Esther Angel in cheongsams, said she wanted to re-create an atmosphere and era.

“It’s meant to be Shanghai in the 1930s when jazz was huge, because jazz got its tentacles all around the globe and Shanghai wasn’t excluded from that. We’re encouraging people to get dressed up. If you can’t dance, don’t let that put you off. It’s just good fun.”

The event, dubbed Swingstation Shanghai, starts at 7.30pm on February 16. Performers include The Shuffle Club and Leigh Barker and The New Sheiks, with a complimentary dance lesson at 7.45pm.
