A FREE cycling program helping women gain more confidence on their bikes will wheel into Maribyrnong this month.
It will introduce women to the health and social benefits of being on a bike and help them learn basic safety and skills, such as changing tyres.
Organiser Tina McCarthy, of Wheel Women, says many women can be intimidated by the prospect of cycling, especially sharing the road.
“They see people out there on their fast road bikes, wearing lots of lycra, and that’s not necessarily for them,” she said.
“Research shows that it’s not a competition for women; for many it’s about the social and recreational aspect.”
The accredited AustCycle coach says getting more women on bikes has benefits for the whole community.
“Healthy mums means happy mums, and great role models for their kids. Not to mention it works to combat the prevalence of mature-onset diabetes and obesity.”
Ms McCarthy says the long-overdue program fills a real gap in Melbourne.
“The women don’t need to wear lycra and they aren’t going to be made to feel they are asking dumb questions; it’s about giving them the support they need so they are comfortable.”
The free courses are open to women who are not working full time. Participants must have their own bike and helmet. The three-week program will run at Coulson Gardens, Chifley Drive, Maribyrnong, 9.30-11.30am on Fridays from February 22 or 1-3pm on Tuesdays from February 26.
