Collection collaboration for Clean Up Australia Day

MARIBYRNONG’S parks and gardens are set for a spruce-up when the nation’s largest annual volunteer event — Clean Up Australia Day — returns on Sunday, March 3.

Over 23 years, Clean Up Australia Day volunteers have spent more than 25 million hours removing about 272,500 tonnes of rubbish from some 137,500 sites.

The 2012 Rubbish Report, based on last year’s clean-up, showed rivers and creeks were the sites most likely to have rubbish, followed by beaches and coastal areas.

In Victoria, more plastic was collected than any other type of rubbish, led by recyclable beverage containers.

Maribyrnong mayor Catherine Cumming said Clean up Australia Day allowed residents to pitch in and help make a tangible difference to their community.

The council’s official clean-up site is at Braybrook’s Skinner Reserve, where volunteers from all sites can meet for a free barbecue.

Maribyrnong Council also has a corporate clean-up day for employees next Tuesday with staff from Metro, Victoria Police and other organisations.
