Cuba on her mind, but Williamstown first

MARATHON swimmer Chloe McCardel (pictured) will complete the Jalna Big Bay Swim from Port Melbourne to Williamstown before attempting a world-first crossing from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage.

McCardel, who has swum the English Channel six times, including two double crossings, is an entrant in the annual 3.2-kilometre swim across Port Phillip Bay on Sunday. Williamstown’s Point Gellibrand Rotary Club is urging swimmers to follow her lead to raise money for charity projects, including cancer research.

“Cancer support is important to me because my mother had breast cancer when I was a teenager,” McCardel says.

“I’m doing the Cuba-Florida swim to raise money for cancer research.”
