Melbourne Autumn Daytour: George just MAD about riding

THERE’S a pretty good chance you’ve seen West Footscray’s George Marney out and about on his bike.

The sprightly 76-year-old is still racking up the miles after more than 60 years in the saddle.

“I’ve been cycling all my life. I started racing when I was 14,” he says.

Over time he came to love longer rides, notching up more than 100 event rides, including 17 RACV Great Victorian Bike Rides.

“In 1996, I rode the Nullarbor from Adelaide to Perth,” he says. “I’ve also done rides for the Royal Flying Doctor Service in places like Broken Hill. You meet some great people along the way and hear about their way of life.”

This weekend Mr Marney will tackle a 105-kilometre ride over Mt Macedon as part of the MAD (Melbourne Autumn Daytour) Ride, the oldest recreational ride in Victoria.

It celebrates its 30th anniversary on Sunday with a ride around Woodend.
