VSDCA: So close as Seagulls let clincher get away

WILLIAMSTOWN has played out a dramatic tie with Moorabbin in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association.

The Seagulls’ finals ambitions took a turn for the worse as a result of their failure to win.

Chasing 191, the Seagulls were bowled out for 190, on the second-last ball of the innings.

They could point to the 14 wides they coughed up in Moorabbin’s innings of 8-190.

Cameron Smith bowled an entire extra over and a bit with six wides and two no-balls. The team had 23 extras.

Opening bowler Daniel Popa had team-best figures of 2-22 off seven, but also had three wides. Veteran all-rounder Craig Sheedy snared 2-32 off eight.

The Seagulls made a flying start to their run chase. Nathan Hall (36) and Sheedy (43) combined for 73 for the second wicket to put the home side in the box seat at 2-89.

Moorabbin tightened the screws in the middle overs, taking wickets at regular intervals.

Brenton Hodges (18), Mathew Inness (22), Graham Murdoch (16) and Grant Sandars (19) all got starts without capitalising.

It was left to tail-enders Smith and Popa to guide the Seagulls home. They got seven runs to get to the tie before Smith heard his stumps rattle.

The Seagulls will need an abacus of results to go their way to feature in the finals.

For starters, they need to get over Yarraville in the western suburbs derby away at the Yarraville Oval. Secondly, they need the Kingston Saints to be beaten on the road by Moorabbin.

Then they need either Brighton or Ormond — the fifth and sixth placed sides meet at Brighton Beach Oval — to lose. If they somehow manage to play out a tie, the Seagulls are heading for their end-of-season break.

■ Altona has shaken up the finals with a gutsy four-wicket win over Ormond at EE Gunn Reserve. The A’s coasted to the 224 target with 18 overs and four wickets to spare.

The in-form A’s have won three of their past four matches but left their run a tad late to make a run for the finals.

■ Yarraville fell 60 runs short in its run chase against Elsternwick at Elsternwick Park.
