International Women’s Day: Footscray’s talent on show as artists push for equity

EQUITY for women will be in the spotlight when International Women’s Day celebrations are held in Footscray this week.

Maribyrnong Council is joining with Brimbank Council and Women’s Health West to showcase performances and artwork by talented young female artists, organised by the FReeZA committee.

The event incorporates the appointment of Cr Sarah Carter as the council’s inaugural gender equity ambassador as part of a 2014 ‘gender equity strategy’.

Maribyrnong Council has committed to appointing a new ambassador each year to ensure gender equity remains high on the agenda in community and council.

Mayor Catherine Cumming said International Women’s Day celebrated “the women in our lives, be they mothers, daughters, sisters, friends or colleagues”.

International Women’s Day celebrations will be held at Phoenix Youth Centre, 72 Buckley Street, Footscray, from 4.30-6.30pm on Friday.
