All aboard at free Yarraville book station

A FREE public “book station” could be trialled soon in Yarraville.

The idea follows a supportive officer’s report on the plan to last night’s Maribyrnong Council community and services committee meeting.

The proposal for a site east of the Yarraville railway station is based on the “book crossing” practice of leaving a book in a public place to be picked up and read by others, who then do likewise.

The idea for the ‘book station’ was presented to the council by three Yarraville residents.

The report by council officers on the proposal found it to be “a positive, innovative concept for the Yarraville goods yard”.

The report also stated that the proposal would complement the council’s role in activating public areas and promoting community literacy and community building.

The first step in creating the “book station” would be to seek permission from landowner VicTrack.

A more detailed proposal would then be prepared if permission was granted.

Funding of a suitable portable structure would then be sought through donations and via the council’s community grants program.
