Youth Week arrives with Splash in Maribyrnong

YOUTH Week arrives with a splash on Friday as week-long celebrations kick off with an art exhibition launch at the Phoenix Youth Centre.

The Splash Gallery exhibition will showcase art from local young people in a range of fields including photography, sculpture and painting.

Other activities across Maribyrnong from April 5-12 for those aged 12-25 include hip-hop, sport, film and food.

Phoenix Youth Centre celebrates its fourth birthday party in grand style on Monday with soccer and basketball tournaments, games, food and performances.

Local DJ Ed Word will spin the hits during dance parties at Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre next Tuesday and at Phoenix Youth Centre next Thursday.

On Wednesday, multiculturalism will be celebrated at the International Food and Film Festival at Phoenix Youth Centre.

The festival features the screening of House of the Flying Daggers and Slumdog Millionaire along with a range of cuisines including Turkish, Vietnamese and African.

Hip-Hop at the Courts is at Braybrook Community Centre next Friday and features local hip-hop crew Raw Elements, dance groups and an open mic rap session. The festival wraps up next Friday with the annual Push Start Battle of the Bands, with five acts competing at Phoenix Youth Centre for a spot at the 2014 Push Over Music Festival.

Mayor Catherine Cumming says National Youth Week is a great chance to celebrate the young people in Maribyrnong.

“With such outstanding young people in our community, our city’s future certainly looks bright.”
