Little Athletics: Altona athletes haul home gold from state track and field championships

ALTONA Athletics Centre returned with an impressive medal haul from the Little Athletics Victoria State Track and Field Championships in Bendigo.

Altona athletes reeled in six gold, two silver and two bronze in what turned out to be a memorable weekend.

“This was a fantastic result for our centre and really shows the quality of athletes we have in the Hobsons Bay area and the benefit for young athletes to run on grass,” team manager Gary Whatman said.

Brodie Hicks is the talk of the centre after taking the championships by storm.

The U10 boys competitor took out gold in the 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m events.

Hicks ran fastest-ever in the 200m and 400m, breaking records that stood for 17 years in both events.

Matthew Hussey wanted to go one better after last year’s double silver.

He was right on the money with a double gold in the 800m and 1500m.

In the 800m, he ran a personal best, coming from behind to chase down the race leader in the final straight.

Megan Whatman and Zoe Woods both claimed a silver and a bronze in the U10 girls.

Whatman did it in the 60m hurdles and 80m hurdles, won by athletes who set new state records.

Woods took silver in the 800m, finishing behind another record-setting winner, and bronze in the 400m.
