Ferrum family foundry folds

More than two dozen jobs may be lost with closure of a near-century-old West Footscray foundry. The fourth-generation family-owned Graham Campbell Ferrum, which opened in 1922, closed last week in the wake of rising energy costs and a high Australian dollar. The Geelong Road business was one of Australia’s leading producers of large ductile iron castings, and it exported to markets in South-East Asia, the US, South America, Africa and the Middle East.

Easter blitz nabs unsafe drivers

Two drivers were charged with drink-driving and 42 fined for safety offences in a Hobsons Bay Easter road blitz. Inspector Richard Paterson said police conducted more than 2800 breath tests from Thursday night until midnight Monday. Safety offences included not wearing seatbelts, speeding and mobile phone use.

Pet registration renewals

Pet owners have one week to renew their pet registration with their council ahead of the April 10 deadline.

Horse float stolen

Police are investigating the theft of a horse float and riding equipment from the Williamstown Horse and Pony Club overnight on March 22. Information: Hobsons Bay crime investigation unit, 9392 3111
