Sibling remanded on murder count

An Altona Meadows man charged with murdering his brother in Seabrook has been remanded. Police were called to a Beleura Way house about 8.30pm last Saturday and found that an Altona Meadows man, 28, had been stabbed to death. The homicide squad’s Detective Senior Sergeant Ron Iddles confirmed they were brothers.

Asylum seekers on hunger strike

A group of 29 asylum seekers has launched a hunger strike at the Maribyrnong detention centre. The 25 Tamils, two Burmese and two Iranians have been detained indefinitely.

Sailing in from around the world

Nine tall ships will sail into Williamstown for Melbourne’s first tall ships festival from September 6-14. The largest, at 58 metres long, will be Indonesian naval ship Dewaruci II. The UK’s Lord Nelson will come from Southampton with Australian ships the Windeward Bound from Hobart, Soren Larsen and Young Endeavour from Sydney, and Melbourne’s Enterprize.

Beware of the yellow tram line

Motorists are being urged to take care and stay clear of the yellow line on roads shared with tram routes. There have been almost 60 crashes in Maribyrnong over the past four years at the hotspots of Footscray station (16 crashes), the intersection of Ballarat Road and Gordon Street (16), Raleigh and Wests roads (14), River and Gordon streets (11), and Williamson and Rosamond roads (2).
