Footscray carjacking nightmare for woman ends in Ascot Vale

UPDATE: Police have released an image of a man who may be able to assist their investigation into a brazen act of carjacking in Footscray on Thursday.

The man, armed with an edged weapon, climbed into the passenger seat of the BMW outside Footscray Market just after 1pm and demanded 31-year-old Point Cook woman drive to an ATM, Victoria Police said.

The car ended up in Union Road, Ascot Vale, where the woman was forced to get out of the car and withdraw cash at an ATM.

She handed over the cash to the man, who then fled.

The suspect is described as a southern European man in his 30s, 160-170 centimetres, with dark hair, dark gray-blue top and khaki pants.

Investigators believe this was a random attack and the woman did not know the man.

Police have released images of a man they believe can assist with their investigation.

Detectives are appealing for anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppers.com.au.
