VNL: Heroic Falcons draw with Waves

IT was a lionhearted City West Falcons who forced a 48-apiece draw with Peninsula Waves in the Victorian Netball League championship.

The Falcons had only seven fit top-tier players with Demi Woodlock missing with illness and Liz Watson unavailable for selection.

Of course, they tired late in a thrilling game at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Wednesday night, but the spirited Falcons found a way to claim a share of the points under trying circumstances.

“We were pretty light on,” Falcons coach Marg Lind told the Weekly.

“Given the fact that we had to run seven throughout the game, it was good to get a draw; it’s better than a loss.”

Julia Knott and Maggie Lind put on a clinic under the cylinder.

They combined for a 93% shooting accuracy, landing 48 from 52 shots.

Knott was superb, sinking 36 from 39 attempts, while Lind made the most of limited opportunities with 12 from 13.

“We had seven less shots, so we were lucky the goalers shot at 93%,” Lind said. “Both goalers were really good.”

VU-Western Lightning continued its dominance over the championship, turning the mid-point on top of the ladder.

The Lightning improved to 8-1 after a 47-32 win over the Yarra Valley Grammar Ariels.
