Lacrosse Victoria: Ripping start by Scray derails lacrosse rivals, MCC

FOOTSCRAY showed no mercy in a 19-8 drubbing of MCC in the Lacrosse Victoria men’s state league at the Albert Ground on Saturday.

The Scray fired in a massive eight first-quarter goals from six individual scorers and never looked back. James Lawerson was on-song with a game-high six goals.

Daniel Stiglich was involved in a lot of key moments with four goals and four assists.

Williamstown made it four wins from as many games. The Fearons were made to work hard for a 12-9 win over Eltham at Lower Eltham Park.

In division 1, Altona edged out Melbourne University, 12-10, in a thriller at Western Oval.

Scores were deadlocked at the end of each of the opening three quarters before the A’s out-scored the hosts 6-4 in the fourth to claim the win.

The A’s remain equal-top with Williamstown as the only unbeaten sides.

In women’s state league, Footscray achieved a modicum of revenge over Newport in a 10-7 grand final rematch win at Angliss Reserve.

The Scray, thrashed by Newport in last year’s decider, showed no mental scars as they took the game up to the favourites. Sarah Smith scored a hat-trick for the Scray, while Rhiannon Birch and Sarah Mollison scored doubles. Abbie Burgess had a major impact with five assists.

Newport could not keep its unbeaten record intact, despite Lyndsey Paton and Elise Hussey firing in three goals each.

Williamstown enjoyed a 10-7 win over Eastside on the back of five goals to Nicole Butkiewicz.
