MARIBYRNONG pupils are adding an artistic touch to the council’s Refugee Week celebrations.
The annual Refugee Week art competition invites primary school-aged children to create artwork inspired by the theme ‘We welcome friends from around the world’.
The top 12 artworks will each win a prize and join a travelling exhibition visiting locations such as Footscray library, Phoenix Youth Centre and Highpoint shopping centre.
Maribyrnong mayor Catherine Cumming says people can vote for their favourite artwork at the exhibition sites or through the council’s Facebook page.
“The Refugee Art Week competition is a fantastic way for students to develop an understanding about the challenges facing refugees and explore ways in which harmony can be created in the classroom and community,” she said.
Refugee Week (June 16-22) celebrations in Maribyrnong will include the unfurling of a welcome banner and launch of a Welcome booklet, a resource for newly arrived members of the community.
“Refugee Week is a great opportunity to learn about the remarkable journeys people undertake worldwide and celebrate the contributions diverse nationalities make to our communities,” Cr Cumming said. Artwork can be delivered to the council offices or posted to Refugee Week art competition, Maribyrnong Council, PO Box 58, Footscray 3011. The Entries must be received by May 31. — Benjamin Millar
