Bolte Bridge crash highlights urgent need for east-west link

LAST Friday’s Bolte Bridge crash has highlighted the need for an east-west link, and the project’s long-awaited business case is 99.9 per cent complete, according to Premier Denis Napthine.

Yosef Jaffary, 39, of Roxburgh Park, remains in a critical condition after falling 20 metres from his truck cabin on to the road.

Police said a city-bound car, driven by a 25-year-old Spotswood man, tried to merge with traffic in front of the truck about 6.30am.

The car made contact with the truck, spun and landed in front of it. The truck then swerved, hit the right barrier, veered across four lanes and landed on the left concrete barrier.

The car driver is in a stable condition in hospital.

Dr Napthine, who visited the scene of the accident on Sunday, said the multibillion-dollar road link would provide motorists with “more options” and help alleviate the traffic chaos caused by serious crashes. He repeated his calls for the federal government to contribute $1.5 billion for the proposed road.

Federal Infrastructure Minister Anthony Albanese, who was in Melbourne reiterating the Gillard government’s $3 billion commitment for the Melbourne Metro rail tunnel, said the government needed to see a business case for the road. Dr Napthine said the business case would be delivered by June 30.
