Shipyard jobs at risk

Williamstown’s shipyard says the jobs of up to 1100 workers are under threat unless it wins more government contracts in the next two years. BAE Systems maritime director Bill Saltzer said the federal government’s contract to build four Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD) blocks provided only a short-term benefit. Computers stolen from school

Maribyrnong police are investigating the theft of 15 Apple MacBook laptops from Braybrook Secondary College just before 4am last Wednesday. It was the second burglary at a Braybrook school in as many weeks.

Chinese temple on track

The $5 million first stage of the Heavenly Queen Temple in Footscray has been completed. The temple is on track to become the biggest Chinese temple in Australia by 2019.

Journey starts in Footscray

Footscray will play first stop in the quest for public support to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the constitution. Inspired by AFL legend Michael Long’s Long Walk to Dreamtime at the ‘G, and marking National Sorry Day, the Journey To Recognition will be welcomed into the west by Greens MP Colleen Hartland at Nicholson Street Mall, Footscray, at 1.30pm on Sunday before crossing the nation to Nhulunbuy in the Northern Territory.

Screening urged

Western suburbs women are being urged by BreastScreen Victoria to have regular breast screens. The call follows new research showing Victorian women from 11 non-English-speaking backgrounds are falling below the state mammogram average of 55 per cent. PSOs take charge at Altona

Protective Services Officers will be at Altona railway station every weeknight from 6pm to last train. From February to December last year, Victoria Police made nearly 1400 arrests as a result of the work done by PSOs.
