Footscray galleries throw open doors for ‘art crawl’

FOOTSCRAY’S galleries and art spaces will throw open their doors on Saturday for the first ‘ON FOOT’ art crawl.

Organiser Chantal Wynter said the free guided art crawls would be the perfect introduction for locals and visitors alike to the many and varied art spaces popping up throughout Footscray.

The Footscray visual artist said it was a good way to show people there was a great creative scene in the west.

“There are so many galleries in the one area, so it’s a good introduction for people who don’t know about the galleries in Footscray,” she said.

Wynter said Footscray had long been home to many artists, but was starting to gain a reputation for its galleries as well.

“There are hybrid spaces opening up like Colourbox Studios, which runs as a gallery but also has events and workshops. Bruce ARI does sound installations, so gallery culture is changing to more of that hybrid sort of style.”

The guided Art Crawl begins at Trocadero Art Space at noon before travelling to Five Walls Project, Bruce ARI, Knight Street Art Space and Colour Box Studio, wrapping up at the Dancing Dog Café. Wynter said the galleries had been talking about an event like this for a long while, so she stepped up to coordinate the initiative.

The tour will feature installation pieces, traditional mediums such as painting and sculpture as well as paper and sound works.

There is a program of events throughout the day to coincide with the crawl. “The first Art Crawl is booked out but we’ve put on a second crawl a little later in the day. “At each space along the way there will either be an artist’s talk or a performance of some kind. Then from 4pm onwards there will be a few bands playing at the Dancing Dog Café. This is all free — it should be a great day.”
