Footy’s $5000 for a cause
A weekend football match between St Bernard’s and Old Xavier in Essendon has raised $5000, part of which will help the cause of a young Newport Digger blinded by a roadside bomb in Iraq. Private Liam Haven, 24, is walking from Sydney to Canberra in September to raise money for Guide Dogs Victoria and Soldier On, an organisation for young soldiers. Private Haven, who will do sections of the walk with his guide dog, Omen, hopes to raise $1 million to help Guide Dogs Victoria. Details: onefootforward.gofundraise.com.au.
Man charged after crash
Police have charged a 30-year-old man following a crash in Braybrook on Monday night. Detectives in an unmarked police car stopped a car in Ashley Street but the driver allegedly raced away at high speed, crashed into a traffic light and flipped over. An off-duty firefighter helped police free the 30-year-old Strathmore man, before he was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with minor injuries. The man has been charged with conduct endangering serious injury and traffic offences. He was bailed to appear at the Sunshine Magistrate’s Court on July 29.
Course to help jobless
A four-week course to help the west’s job seekers gain entry level positions will start next month. The joint Victoria University and Victoria Police project covers resume and cover letter writing, job interview preparation and a work placement at a university hospitality venue. The course will run from 10am-2pm weekdays from June 11-July 8 at Victoria University’s Footscray Nicholson campus. Details: Karen Fitzsimon, 9919 8741.
VicRoads bans road cut-outs
VicRoads has removed cut-out bicycles and lettering that were attached to Shepherd Bridge in Footscray as part of a call for cycling infrastructure improvements. VicRoads regional director Patricia Liew said a contractor was directed to remove the unauthorised roadside signage, “which is not permitted under the Road Management Act and could cause a distraction to drivers on this busy road”.
