World Environment Day: Phoenix Youth Centre hosts green expo

WORLD Environment Day was marked last Wednesday with a series of hands-on activities and displays in Footscray.

AMES and Environment Victoria joined forces to hold an Environment Expo at Phoenix Youth Centre as part of a ‘Home Planet’ sustainability education and community engagement program.

The course is delivered to more than 100 students each year and aims to address the most urgent needs of newly arrived young people. One of the event’s highlights was a series of presentations by AMES students, including refugees and asylum seekers, many of whom have been learning about sustainability and environmental issues for the first time.

Each student has been involved in environmental projects such as recycling and sustainable housing.

Presentations were held on topics including saving water and energy in your home, making new gifts from recycled items, and growing and preparing food sustainably.
