Werribee crash survivor finds a voice in art

SHE remembers playing on the swings when she was little, but Jayde Threlfall doesn’t remember talking.

About 17 years ago, Ms Threlfall lost the power of speech after being injured in a car crash.

Now 31, the Werribee resident  can’t remember ever speaking, so she can’t say how her life has changed. She has nothing to compare it with. But, she indicates, it’s frustrating.

About a year ago, Ms Threlfall found a different way to communicate. She started painting at annecto David House in Yarraville, an organisation supporting people with a disability.

She expresses her emotions through painting, which makes her feel happy. Ms Threlfall is among five artists whose artwork features in The Colour of Sound exhibition at Newport’s Substation.

Other exhibiting artists are Maria Papaluca, Danny Alsabbagh, Kate Winnell and Mina Iscaro.

The exhibition opens tomorrow at 6pm and runs until July 7.
