ALTONA came out breathing fire after the Hockey Victoria men’s premier league mid-season break.
The A’s routed Waverley 4-1 in an upset result on the road at the Hedley Hull Field on Saturday.
Suddenly, the A’s are just five points outside the top five.
The most impressive aspect for coach Ben Guy was not the result but the manner in which it was achieved.
“We love winning, but the way we did it was most pleasing,” Guy said.
“We played exactly to the game plan. The experienced guys led from the front, and the defensive side from everyone was nearly perfect.
“We need to build on this and take a few more scalps in the second half of the season.”
The A’s man of the match was goalkeeper Ben Oborne, who repelled the host’s attacks.
The A’s scored first on a penalty corner through Chris Coleman.
Coleman made it a double from the same situation 10 minutes into the second half.
Waverley would not go away, halving the deficit through a screamer of a goal from Luke Young.
But this would be the A’s day as Matthew Huf and Tyson Priddle scored to put the icing on the cake.
Footscray, meanwhile, made it a western suburbs double with a 3-1 triumph over Toorak-East Malvern.
Justin Ellis scored a double for the Bulldogs, while Andrew Monte also bagged a goal in the win.
In the women’s premier league, Altona lost 1-0 to Waverley, leaving it second-last on the table.
Footscray drew 2-2 with TEM and lost ground on the top four.
