Hooning victim pleads with council for protection

AN Altona Meadows woman who has been living in a Williamstown hotel since a driver crashed into her home is calling on Hobsons Bay council to protect fearful residents from hoon drivers.

While the man who smashed through Giovanna Agosta’s Myers Parade house on May 11 had a medical condition, two weeks earlier an alleged hoon driver crashed into a home just a block away.

A 24-year-old Footscray man has been charged with careless driving over the incident.

Ms Agosta said that in yet another close call, a car came to rest at the door of a nearby home.

She said hooning was a daily occurrence in surrounding streets, which was evident from burnt rubber marks caused by cars performing donuts and skidding.

Just hours after speaking to the Weekly on Friday, Ms Agosta was again shaken to learn that a van had ploughed into a nearby Laverton restaurant, injuring three people. The driver, a Glenroy man, 57, is facing drink-driving and other traffic charges, while three patrons were left in shock and nursing minor injuries.

Hobsons Bay police Inspector Richard Paterson said half of the drivers arrested for hoon driving in the municipality this year were from outside the area.

More than 25 vehicles were impounded between January and April under hoon legislation. All  drivers were males aged 16-25, some of them  unlicensed.

Ms Agosta said the council needed to block off local streets to through traffic, install speed humps and make some streets one-way only.

The incident, which knocked her off her couch, has left her traumatised and determined to ensure others don’t suffer the same fate – or worse.

Hobsons Bay council is arranging to meet with Ms Agosta to discuss her concerns.
