Footscray City’s lessons for a bold new world

A NEW sustainability centre at Footscray City College will deliver students a launch-pad to careers in science and technology.

The centre, expected to open later this year, includes a science classroom with environmental monitoring systems, computer-controlled glasshouse and potting booths, a hydroponic system, and shade and propagation houses.

Students will be able to undertake environmental and sustainability projects, measure main energy use and build skills for urban, organic gardening.

Gellibrand MP Nicola Roxon and Labor candidate for the federal seat, Tim Watts, toured the site last week. They also visited the site of the school’s new sci-tech centre, to be equipped for studies in physics, robotics, electronics, engineering, avionics and sustainable technologies.

Principal Maria Bawden says the  buildings will offer students exciting programs for environmental science and sustainability, and higher-end science and technology. “The sustainability centre will be a base for involving our feeder primary students and wider community in local environmental projects.’
