Footscray keeps hockey finals bid alive

FOOTSCRAY has secured a solid 2-1 away win over MCC in the Hockey Victoria men’s premier league.

The Bulldogs triumphed on the back of goals to Andrew Monte and Reece Shand.

Monte is a top-five goal scorer in the competition with 12 scores to his name.

The Bulldogs are four points outside the top four and five points above the relegation zone.

This weekend’s doubleheader will go some way to determining if they are contenders or pretenders in the title race.

They will host Essendon, which sits one point above them on the ladder, for a finals-like encounter on Saturday before travelling to take on top-of-the-ladder Camberwell the following day.

Altona was hit for six: a 6-0 loss to finals contender Hawthorn.

The A’s sit a point above the bottom two.

In women’s premier league, it was a case of all-out attack in the match between Footscray and MCC, with the honours shared in a 4-4 draw.

The Bulldogs, one spot out of the top four and still in the finals hunt, will be the most disappointed of the two teams in terms of not gaining maximum points.

Olivia Colasurdo, Georgia Hopkins, Monica Singh and Leah Merrett were the Bulldogs’ scorers.

Altona’s horrible weekend was completed by a 9-2 loss at the hands of Hawthorn.

Barring a major turnaround, the out-of-sorts A’s will finish the season in the bottom two.

Meanwhile, Victoria has claimed the men’s national title after beating New South Wales 2-1 in the final in Newcastle on Sunday.
