East-west link: New stresses in road plan

THE decision by Labor to dump support for the controversial east-west link has sparked uncertainty about the future of road projects in the inner-west.

After months of mixed messages and wavering support within Labor, opposition leader Daniel Andrews said he couldn’t back the $8 billion tunnel from the Eastern Freeway to CityLink. Mr Andrews said under Liberals’ plans, people living in Footscray, Williamstown, Altona and surrounding areas would not see a single cent spent on addressing congestion on local roads.

Maribyrnong council and council lobby group LeadWest have been pushing for the east-west link to begin at the western end, in keeping with recommendations by Infrastructure Australia chief Rod Eddington.

Maribyrnong Truck Action Group president Samantha McArthur said the state government must reconsider the Truck Action Plan to remove freight from residential roads, adding that the east-west link was unlikely to solve the long-standing issue.
