SUSTAINABLE creativity will be on display in a new exhibition in West Footscray as part of the Craft Victoria’s annual Craft Cubed festival.
Artists Gaye Naismith and Melanie Hill will present Homefront at Post Industrial Design, featuring ‘upcycled’ materials lovingly stitched into a crocheted rug, furniture and wall art.
This year’s festival theme ‘A Better Blueprint’ is focussing on getting back to basics to craft a better future – a perfect fit for Naismith and Hill, who are passionate about sustainable local production and have upcycling since 2006.
Naismith said the pair both love the ‘making do’ approach to creativity.
“We work with fibres and other bits and pieces gleaned from second hand sources, and the scraps of felted jumpers left over from the other things we make,” she said.
“While exploring the possibilities and limitations that arise from working with such materials is central to both our textile practices, we diverge markedly in our stitchingand construction techniques and in the types of objects we have created for this show.”
Homefront at Post Industrial Design launches with a free opening event 6-8pm tonight (Thursday, August 8) at Post Industrial Design, 638 Barkly Street, West Footscray.
The exhibition will run until August 28 and feature a pop-up shop with craft from the artists’ labels Body Parts Winter Accessories, Gaye Abandon and Textile Allsorts.
