SUSTAINABLE creativity is on display in a new West Footscray exhibition as part of Craft Victoria’s annual Craft Cubed festival.
Artists Gaye Naismith and Melanie Hill are presenting Homefront at Post Industrial Design, featuring “upcycled” materials lovingly stitched into a crocheted rug, furniture and wall art.
This year’s festival theme, “A Better Blueprint”, is focusing on getting back to basics to craft a better future – a perfect fit for Naismith and Hill, who are passionate about sustainable local production and have been upcycling since 2006.
“We work with fibres and other bits and pieces gleaned from second-hand sources, and the scraps of felted jumpers left over from the other things we make,” Naismith says.
“We diverge markedly in our stitching and construction techniques and in the types of objects we have created for this show.” BM
Homefront runs at Post Industrial Design, 638 Barkly Street, West Footscray, until August 28.
