AN Altona café is urging people to help those in need by buying a coffee to be donated to the suburb’s disadvantaged residents.
Melissa Cakes, on the corner of Pier and Queen streets, last week became the 99th café in Victoria to sign up to the idea of “suspended coffees”.
The concept involves buying an extra “suspended” coffee for someone who cannot afford to buy one.
Underprivileged people can then visit the café and ask if any suspended coffees are available.
Manager Katrina Ellis said the idea was a fantastic initiative for the local community.
“When people are in a tough spot and battling to buy food and pay the bills, they are forced to forgo luxuries like a coffee in the morning.
“Hopefully this idea will help people out a little in a time of need.”
To prevent the system being abused, the café has provided
Salvation Army Hobsons Bay and local youth group Latitude with suspended
coffee vouchers.
Coffee supplier Grinders has also donated 400 free coffees to the cafe to kickstart the suspended coffee trend in Altona.
