Commuters on the Bendigo and Sunbury lines face an 11-day rail shutdown next month.
Buses will replace trains between Albion and Footscray from October 3 to the last service on October 13 for major Regional Rail Link (RRL) works.
Footscray projects include bridge works at Nicholson and Hopkins streets, structural work on the freight flyover and an upgrade of Footscray railway station.
The existing West Footscray station will be demolished during the closure and passengers will use the new station from October 14.
Public Transport Minister Terry Mulder said the shutdown would speed up the project and allow the works to be carried out safely.
“The work [will lead to] opening of the new station footbridge at West Footscray railway station, ahead of the operational opening of the new station at the end of the occupation,” he said.
Premier Denis Napthine said the project had created 3481 direct jobs and was proceeding ahead of schedule.
“Not only is the project creating nearly 3500 jobs directly, it is also creating thousands more in the cafés, suppliers and related industries that service the project,” he said.
