Werribee line tops list for unhappy travellers

Werribee-line commuters are the most dissatisfied in Melbourne with only 3 per cent reporting they are happy with the train service, an RACV survey has found.

The On Track survey, which used online self-reporting from about 1100 Metro passengers, found that late trains were the biggest concern of Williamstown and Werribee passengers.

People travelling between Spotswood and North Melbourne were separately surveyed, with 8 per cent saying trains weren’t on time.

RACV public transport and mobility manager Thanuja Gunatillake said there had also been many complaints about car parking and poor connecting services.

“It’s not just about the trains but having enough car parks at the station, having enough buses that actually give you an alternative,’’ she said.

Seventy-one per cent of commuters on the Werribee line said they drove to the station.

Public Transport Victoria spokeswoman Helen Witton said Metro was required to ensure trains were no more than four minutes late 87 per cent of the time.

“On average for the past 12 months, 89.9 per cent of Metro services on the Werribee line have arrived on time,” she said.

“Since October, 2010, the Werribee-line timetable has been improved with 181 extra services a week.”

Public Transport Users Association president Tony Morton said the Werribee line had long-standing problems.

“It has suffered from poor frequencies and low reliability, in part thanks to chronic signal and other track equipment problems around Newport,” he said. “The Altona loop is a particular source of discontent, as reported to us, as it got a substantial degradation in service with the 2011 timetable changes.”
