Diabetic Paul rewarded for a life well lived

A Maribyrnong man’s positive attitude during a lifelong battle with diabetes has been recognised with a Kellion Victory Medal by Diabetes Australia.

Paul Poropat received the honour from Lieutenant-Governor Marilyn Warren last week in a ceremony at Government House.

Mr Poropat, 55, said diabetes had been challenging but also rewarding.

“Diabetes has made me the person I am – more compassionate, more understanding and sympathetic towards those who are ill or are not well, because I have experienced the highs and the lows,” he said.

Diagnosed at the age of five, Mr Poropat was looked after in his early life by mother Maria.

“It was so difficult for her and in some way she gave me the strength to stand up on my own, to look after myself.”

The sooner people living with diabetes accepted the condition, Mr Poropat said, the sooner they could get on with living a full life.

“Educate yourself about your condition and don’t let it stop you from doing anything in life. Remember, life is for living, not preserving.”

Diabetes Australia – Vic chief executive Craig Bennett said Kellion Victory Medal recipients were an inspiration to people living with diabetes.

“People who have lived with diabetes for over 50 years deserve our utmost respect and admiration,” he said.

“We all can learn a lot from their determination and attitude towards living well with diabetes.”
