Hundreds flocked to Altona and Williamstown beaches on Monday, Melbourne’s hottest day in nine months with the mercury reaching 36 degrees.
But flaring temperatures also brought trouble, with two police officers allegedly assaulted after being surrounded by a crowd at Altona railway station.
A police spokeswoman said two Sunbury females, 15 and 21, were subdued with capsicum spray after allegedly digging their nails into the officers. The pair and a Footscray youth, 17, were arrested and may be charged.
Graeme Davis of Parks Victoria urged people to think before jumping or diving from piers and jetties.
“People don’t realise that water depths change daily as a result of the tides, sand movement and submerged debris,” he said.
