The Defence Department has moved to ease fears of job cuts at the Royal Australian Air Force Williams base in Laverton.
A spokesman said the review of services at the base was confined to one unit, the Logistics Information Systems Branch (LOGIS), which had 170 staff – 75 per cent civilian and the rest military.
An anonymous source claimed hundreds of jobs were on the line under a review of the LOGIS branch by the Canberra-based department’s Chief Information Officer Group (CIOG), the national information technology infrastructure provider that took over LOGIS this year. A department spokesman said a review of the branch and its functions was still under way.
No decision has been made on the “future delivery of these functions”.
“The CIOG leadership has advised staff that there is no intention to relocate positions from LOGIS at RAAF Williams,” he said.
“There may be a reduction in the number of positions within LOGIS as a result of natural attrition.’’
The spokesman said there were 1200 full-time positions at the Laverton base, of which about one-third were military staff, but the review affected only one unit. “RAAF Williams is home to many other units not affected by this reform program,” he said.
