Nicholson Street will come alive with food, stalls and entertainment next week when a market pops up to take over the southern end of the Footscray street.
From the railway line to Buckley Street will be closed to traffic on December 12 to make way for the Nicholson South Pop-Up Market. The twilight market is an attempt to support businesses hurt by the street being cut off from the centre of Footscray because of Regional Rail Link works.
Local artists and designers will showcase their wares alongside free entertainment curated by the Big West Festival, including theatre ensemble Born in a Taxi and musical group Robbie Bundle and the Adopted Souls.
Bundle said he was proud to be involved in an event to help the struggling shops and eateries in the cut-off strip.
“It’s great to be asked to play and to have the opportunity, but it’s even more important to give support where it is most needed,” he said.
Footscray designers Julie and Kelly Tran of Aacute will hold a stall featuring their handmade jewellery and candles.
Julie said the Footscray community had been very supportive of their creations and she looked forward to being part of the pop-up market, which could become an annual event if a success.
The pop-up market will be held from 4-8pm on Thursday, December 12.
To coincide with the event, the final Footscray Art Crawl for 2013 will begin at Footscray Community Arts Centre at 5.30pm, finishing at the pop-up market.
